Process and Operating Advantages

Whatever the process application, the BSP Multiple Hearth Furnace system offers significant advantages. It provides intimate solid-gas contact, maintains close temperature control, handles a wide range of feed materials, and yields uniform operating conditions and consistent results.

Fuel Efficiency

Heat transfer occurs through direct flame radiation and material/gas contact. Hot gases from combustion rise counter-current to the flow of material. Contact between the gas and feed occurs across every hearth and during drops from hearth to hearth. Fuel efficiency typically improves with the number of hearths used. Recycling of shaft air and heat recovery exchangers can be utilized to further improve fuel efficiency.

Process Time

Processing is controlled by the speed of the shaft. The shaft is driven through a variable speed drive which can be automated to change speeds with variations in feed moisture or weight.

Multi-Zone Operation

Each hearth forms a distinct chamber where process conditions can be varied. Heat, steam, and reducing agents can be selectively applied to control a process. Multiple process steps such as drying, calcining, incinerating and cooling can be performed simultaneously in the same furnace.

Controls

BSP's advanced instruments and control techniques provide maximum system performance. All critical conditions affecting furnace operation can be automatically monitored and controlled to prevent costly downtime.

Flexibility

One of the salient features of the Multiple Hearth Furnace is its ability to handle a wide variety of materials varying physical and chemical characteristics. Another is its ability to utilize many fuels, including natural gas, reform gas, propane, butane, oil and coal dust, as well as waste oils and solvents.

It also can handle continuous or intermittent operating modes and can be designed with up-draft, down-draft or cross-draft flow patterns to provide optimum process atmospheres.
